The want and demand of individualism and freedom is always attached to further and at times extreme change. This time it affects the domain name suffix. The king of gTLD (generic top-level domain) .COM  will be joined by a wide variety of newly registered extensions, they are currently being sorted, rejected and the ones approved will be released in 2014.

These names are maintained by The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). The main group of generic top-level domains consists of the .com, .info, .net, and .org domains. Endings such as, .biz, .name, and .pro are also considered generic but they do have restrictions, not everyone can access these suffixes. Extensions such as, .edu, .gov, .int, .jobs, are called sponsored top-level domains and approvals are determined by eligibility.

Starting 2014, instead of the normal .com, .org, .net, we will be avalanched by the radical dots of many industries and colours: .accountant, .lingerie, .cars, .donuts, .sport, or .melbourne. You can actually contact any domain name registrar before the end of 2013 and request availability of the list of names already approved, make a request, book your name and snatch your favourite URL before someone thinks of it.

These changes and approvals are making numerous domain names investors and companies extremely nervous. Thousands domain names will depreciate as soon as the new gTLDs are released. If you have several companies with .com, .org, .net, or other, they will instantly be devalued, many domain names will become useless and never have the opportunity for a resale. Domain name resellers need to reassess and re-strategise their investments very fast. This is similar to the stock market platform, a decision is made based on market demand and in one moment your assets are gone.

Consider this a huge shift for online businesses

Creativity and imagination will further give much power and charm to these new extensions. Your online company will instantly be associated with your city, your niche skill – Oh! yes, many will embrace the latter, your industry, your country, your brand, your favourite anything. You can extend your individualism and uniqueness, if you want to put the emphasis on “STAND OUT” this is an opportunity.

Expect further algorithm changes and fluctuations, of course, of course, bring it on, I hear you say. This is not a small change, it will influence, modify and impact more than we can imagine. It is a major shift for online business, many will go redundant and new companies will emerge or transform.

Some will “Carpe Diem” seize the day to give advanced credibility and a touch of glamour to their existing enterprise. It will affect how others perceive you, your business, your brand. The first and lasting impression, you will be judged by your domain name extension. Expect your next business coaching seminar to include this topic in 2014.

I have no doubt you heard, “Goodness, she does not use WordPress.”
The new line on the block starting 2014, “Gracious me, he is still using .com.”                   Pricing will be interesting, $3.95 a year? One wonders how much prestigious, house domain names extension such as, .sotherbys or .laduree or .rothchilds will cost as opposed to .business or .office?

In 2013, I attended quite a few business conferences where the difference between .com and .org was thoroughly explained and why one must select one over the other, I guess these notes can now be ditched, this is how fast online business is shaping. Well expect the tune to be the same (MORE COACHING) but the lyrics transformed to the point where you will have to attend another seminar solely devoted to the scope and magnitude of domain names extension availability, accessibility and the possible SEO, algorithm, opinion, perception, branding disruption this could cause your business. We live in a society where a small (dot) . followed by a few alphabets have the power to cause a lot of drama.

Your selection will affect SEO, algorithm, branding and pricing

Will you be faithful to .com, .org, or your current URL extension or take the plunge keep up with appearances access a brand new web presence identity? It will be very interesting to see how the launch of new domain name extensions affects the market and global online entrepreneurship.

Approach anything new with research, study, weigh the pros and cons for you, your brand, what you represent and your business, decide, plan, then make the change if necessary.

Please leave your thoughts on the matter.
